In the UK, the average worker typically transitions to a new job every five years. However, Walter Orthmann’s story stands out as unique. Hired as a temporary employee at just 15 years old, Walter remained loyal to the same company well into his centenarian years.

Despite the prevalence of layoffs, with approximately 45% of workers facing redundancy at some point, Walter’s longevity in the workforce offers valuable insights. He attributes his sustained employment of 84 years to a simple formula: staying curious, continuously learning, and pursuing his passions.

Walter emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, sufficient rest, and stress management. His advice revolves around staying positive, enjoying work, and engaging in activities that bring joy. He advocates for harmonious relationships, peaceful living, and cherishing each moment in life.

Reflecting on his life philosophy, Walter prioritizes living in the present without excessive concern for the future. His dedication to work and adaptability over eight decades at ReneauxView, a textile company, earned him respect as a mentor among younger colleagues. Known for his kindness and supportive nature, Walter’s colleagues viewed him as an invaluable asset, ensuring his continued employment.

Born in Brazil to German parents in 1922, Walter’s journey from a young packing assistant to a successful Sales Manager showcases his resilience and commitment. Brazil’s labor laws, with specific retirement age and contribution requirements, played a role in Walter’s extended career trajectory.

Despite reaching the age of 102 and passing away in August 2024, Walter never chose to retire. His story serves as a testament to the power of passion, continuous learning, and a positive outlook on life.
