In a shocking turn of events, a man who fatally struck a cyclist and later claimed he was too injured to face trial was captured playing rugby. Stephen Naylor, 41, was driving his Audi at speeds exceeding 120mph when he caused the death of motorcyclist Owen Baugh on the M62 near Liverpool in April 2021. Following the collision, Naylor sustained severe injuries after his car veered off the road and impaled him on a wooden fence.
Despite spending weeks recuperating in the hospital, Naylor’s wife, Lisa, insisted that the crash had lasting effects on his health. They went to great lengths to exaggerate his injuries and health condition to avoid legal proceedings for the fatal accident.
The web of deceit began to unravel when Naylor failed to provide a blood specimen to the authorities upon leaving the hospital in June 2021. Subsequently, a psychiatrist cleared him of the offense in July 2023 after noting his distress during a consultation. Additional evidence surfaced, including video footage of Naylor playing rugby and engaging in other activities, contradicting the claims of his deteriorating health.
Despite using crutches and seeking assistance to move, Naylor eventually confessed to causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while his wife, Lisa, received a four-and-a-half-year sentence for the same charge.
The family of Owen Baugh expressed their profound grief over the incident, stating that their lives had been irrevocably altered since the tragic event. They extended their gratitude to the emergency services, members of the public, and Merseyside Police for their efforts in seeking justice for the victim.
