A man was fatally shot by police after he brandished a bow and arrow towards officers during a welfare check in Gunnedah, located approximately 450km northwest of Sydney. The incident occurred on Friday, January 16, around 1.40pm when police responded to a call at an address on Quia Road.

Upon arrival, officers engaged with the man outside a residence. Subsequently, the man reentered the house and emerged with a bow and arrow, directing it at the officers, prompting the police to seek shelter in their vehicle. As the confrontation escalated, law enforcement discharged a firearm, resulting in the man’s death despite attempts to save him.

The New South Wales Police issued a statement confirming the fatality and initiating a critical incident investigation. The police spokesperson disclosed that the man succumbed to a gunshot wound at the scene following the altercation. A specialized team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
