European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have been accused by Russia’s foreign minister of actively preparing for a conflict with Russia. During a recent press conference in Moscow, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that top European officials, such as Kaja Kallas, Ursula von der Leyen, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Mark Rutte, are openly gearing up for a potential war against Russia. Lavrov emphasized the need for Russia to address the underlying issues causing the crisis related to Ukraine. He claimed that Western powers have long been trying to portray Ukraine as a threat to Russia’s security, aiming to establish a strategic position near Russia and supporting what Russia terms as a “Nazi regime” that took power following the 2014 uprising.

In response to Lavrov’s assertions, it is important to note that Ukraine’s recent elections showed minimal support for far-right ideologies, with far-right candidates receiving a mere 2% of the vote. President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is Jewish, won a significant majority in the elections. Lavrov also accused the Ukrainian government of pursuing policies aimed at diminishing Russian influence in various aspects of Ukrainian society.

Recent developments have seen EU leaders agreeing to provide Ukraine with a substantial interest-free loan of €90 billion (£79 billion) for defense purposes in 2026 and 2027. Notably, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic opted out of contributing to this fund. The UK has also pledged significant financial support to Ukraine, including substantial military aid.

Tragically, a recent mass drone attack by Russia on Ukraine resulted in fatalities and numerous injuries. This escalation occurred as a Ukrainian delegation engaged in peace talks in the US in an attempt to resolve the prolonged conflict. There is optimism that the US and Ukraine may reach agreements this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In a separate incident, an unnamed British diplomat accused of espionage has been expelled from Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry alleged the diplomat’s affiliation with the British secret service, leading to the expulsion. The UK Foreign Office dismissed these accusations as unfounded and harmful, emphasizing the importance of maintaining diplomatic norms amidst such actions by the Kremlin.
