Nigel Farage’s latest addition, Robert Jenrick, expressed admiration for his new leader as he switched allegiance from the Conservative Party, despite their turbulent past. Jenrick, formerly dubbed “Robert Generic,” was removed from the Shadow Cabinet and had his Tory membership suspended following accusations by Conservative head Kemi Badenoch that he was planning to defect to Reform. Shortly after, he joined Farage at a press event where he commended the Reform UK leader for advocating the necessary change for more than a decade.
Although Farage and Jenrick have had public clashes with personal attacks in the past, Jenrick previously criticized Farage’s suitability for roles such as overseeing schools or hospitals. Notably, Jenrick also questioned Farage’s judgment in policymaking decisions. Additionally, Jenrick once mocked Farage’s policy decisions, suggesting they were made impulsively rather than thoughtfully.
In a leaked conversation last year, Jenrick cast doubts on Farage’s leadership abilities, citing an incident where Farage dismissed an MP from his party. Jenrick questioned the seriousness of Reform UK while acknowledging some shared sentiments. Farage, in response, criticized Jenrick as lacking integrity and trustworthiness.
During his tenure as Immigration Minister under Boris Johnson, Jenrick oversaw a significant increase in the number of individuals housed in asylum hotels. Farage condemned Jenrick, labeling him as untrustworthy and a deceitful figure. Following an incident in Epping related to asylum hotels, Farage further criticized Jenrick’s actions, portraying him as unreliable and unfriendly.
The ongoing friction between Farage and Jenrick highlights their contrasting views and approaches to political leadership. Their history of public disagreements underscores the challenges in their newfound collaboration within Reform UK.
