Tennis icon Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, is advocating for significant changes to make the sport less aggressive. The 64-year-old believes that reducing the size of tennis rackets could help prevent injuries caused by the demanding schedule players face. This proposal, however, could disrupt the hierarchy of the sport as players would need to adjust their techniques.

Toni Nadal has criticized the current state of tennis, noting that it has become focused on sheer power, a viewpoint he has been vocal about. He expressed concerns about the increasing speed of the ball and its impact on player injuries, emphasizing the lack of strategic players like Federico Coria and Gaston Gaudio.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Toni emphasized the need to slow down the game to reduce injuries, highlighting the trend of players competing to hit the ball with maximum force. Rafael Nadal has long supported the idea of using smaller rackets, suggesting that it would make the game less aggressive for amateurs while posing challenges for professionals.

Toni Nadal lamented the sport’s reluctance to address these issues, attributing it to the focus on maintaining the status quo for the benefit of top players. Drawing parallels with football’s evolution, he suggested that tennis could learn from changes made in football after the 1990 World Cup to enhance the sport’s dynamics and competitiveness.

Despite guiding Rafael Nadal to numerous Grand Slam victories, including 14 titles, Toni Nadal pointed out that his nephew’s inability to secure an ATP Finals title was partially due to the tournament’s surface not being clay, which suited Rafael’s playing style. He suggested that tennis needs to embrace change, similar to football’s developments in the 1990s, to create a more dynamic and inclusive environment for players.
