A group of 19 male students in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, has been expelled from their school due to concerns surrounding “toxic masculinity” and ongoing reports of these students intimidating teachers. The students were suspended by the school’s head teacher after an alleged incident during an assembly on January 9. Some parents have filed a complaint against the head teacher’s decision, with 16 of them expressing their disapproval and urging the Board of Governors to address the issue seriously.

The school administration stated that the suspensions were a result of a consistent pattern of behavior that led some teachers to avoid teaching classes and others to leave work. A parent representing the group questioned the proportionality of the decision, especially compared to incidents involving violence and bullying. The parent emphasized the need for the Board of Governors to handle the matter seriously and expressed dismay at the labeling of “masculine toxicity” in relation to their son, describing him as respectful and kind-hearted.

According to emails reviewed by a publication, the boys were engaged in disruptive and disrespectful behavior towards staff since September, causing distress to some teachers. The school plans to conduct individual meetings with the families of the suspended students and has requested the boys to write a reflective note on their actions. The emails also alleged that a group of 15 boys confronted the principal in an intimidating manner outside her office.

In response, the principal described the students’ behavior as the most disrespectful and intimidating she had ever encountered in her teaching career. The Education Authority, supporting the school, emphasized its commitment to providing a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff. They highlighted the importance of respect within the school community and stated their efforts to guide students towards making positive choices and resolving issues through restorative practices.
