A government official from Greenland has expressed the feeling of betrayal among the island’s residents towards the United States while appealing for a peaceful resolution.

Naaja Nathanielsen, who serves as the minister of commerce in the region, conveyed in a parliamentary briefing that consultations had been held with allies to strategize responses to a potential incursion led by an individual associated with the name Donald Trump. She advocated for increased NATO presence on Greenland to counter potential threats from Russia and China.

Nathanielsen emphasized the distress caused by Trump’s invasion threats, lauding the steadfast support from the United Kingdom and other European partners. She underscored the pursuit of a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the importance of maintaining friendly relations and alliance cohesion.

When asked about potential NATO assistance in the event of an invasion, Nathanielsen refrained from providing a direct response, highlighting the collective vulnerability faced by all NATO members in such a scenario.

Detailing the adverse effects on the local populace, she noted a pervasive sense of fear and anxiety, particularly among children, due to the escalating situation. The continuous state of uncertainty was described as incomprehensible by the minister.

Recent weeks have seen an escalation in the US President’s rhetoric regarding potential military actions in Greenland, a territory under Danish jurisdiction, citing national security imperatives. Nathanielsen speculated on Trump’s motives, suggesting a complex interplay of interests rather than a singular explanation.

Expressing deep concern over Trump’s statements, Nathanielsen conveyed a sense of betrayal felt by the Greenlandic population, highlighting the offensive nature of the rhetoric and the perceived disregard for the long-standing support extended to American values.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Nathanielsen acknowledged the solidarity shown by countries like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in support of Greenland and Denmark against the US’s threats.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to address Trump’s interest in acquiring the island.

This meeting follows Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen’s reiteration that the island is not for sale and the clear stance against US ownership or governance.

Over the weekend, the US president asserted the necessity of “taking Greenland” to prevent potential actions by Russia or China.
