Virgin Media has announced that some of its broadband customers are in line for a router upgrade. Users still using the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will soon have the opportunity to switch to the more advanced Hub 5 without any additional charges.

The Hub 5 boasts upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology, offering faster and more reliable connections compared to the older routers. Eligible customers will be notified via email in the coming weeks and months as the rollout of the upgrade progresses throughout 2026.

Virgin Media highlighted that the Hub 5 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas for enhanced coverage within users’ homes. The company plans to upgrade selected customers currently using older routers, benefiting thousands of users during the year.

If you are eligible for the upgrade, Virgin Media will contact you directly, eliminating the need for any immediate action on your part. To check your eligibility, you can log in to your My Virgin Media account online or simply check the model sticker on your current router.

Upgrading to the Hub 5 can bring significant improvements to your broadband experience, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, better stability, and the ability to support future updates. It is designed to accommodate faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds, which is more than 10 times faster than the UK average.

Wi-Fi 6 represents the latest wireless networking technology, delivering faster speeds, increased efficiency, and better performance in crowded environments. It can handle multiple connected devices simultaneously, providing improved performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Additionally, Wi-Fi 6 is more energy-efficient, making it ideal for modern smart homes with numerous connected devices and high data requirements. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is now available, Wi-Fi 6 remains suitable for the average user.
