The UK’s safeguarding minister has urged law enforcement to actively pursue individuals who utilize Elon Musk’s Grok platform to create harmful deepfake images involving children.
Jess Phillips expressed her concerns to The Mirror, emphasizing the need for accountability as outrage mounts over the misuse of X’s artificial intelligence tool, Grok. The platform has faced criticism for producing manipulated images, including those of minors, without consent.
Phillips condemned the existence of such features, highlighting the detrimental impact on individuals’ lives due to exploitation. She criticized X’s decision to offer deepfake creation as a premium service, dismissing it as inadequate.
Emphasizing the severity of the issue, Phillips called for stringent legal action against those involved in generating or circulating these illicit images. She stressed the importance of law enforcement pursuing perpetrators to ensure justice, with potential penalties of up to 10 years in prison for offenders.
Regarding social media platforms, Phillips emphasized their legal obligation to promptly remove such content. Failure to do so could result in substantial fines from the regulator Ofcom. She underscored the government’s stance on combating child sexual abuse and stressed the illegality of creating or sharing AI-generated abusive imagery.
The minister highlighted the demands from public figures like Maya Jama to cease the creation of such images. Proposed legislation aims to impose significant penalties, including up to five years in prison, for those involved in producing or disseminating harmful AI content involving children.
Phillips outlined the Labour party’s commitment to combat violence against women and girls, including outlawing applications that generate non-consensual deepfake images. She underscored the government’s legislative efforts to address the issue promptly and called for cooperation from platforms like X to enforce necessary measures.
Ofcom recently raised concerns about Grok’s creation of sexualized images of children, prompting urgent intervention. Musk’s acknowledgment of lapses in safeguards and commitment to rectify the situation was noted. He emphasized consequences for users engaging in illegal content creation through Grok.
The focus remains on accountability and swift action to prevent the proliferation of harmful deepfake imagery, with ongoing efforts to enforce regulations and protect vulnerable individuals.
