London Mayor Sadiq Khan has expressed his discontent with those who undermine London’s reputation, despite recent statistics revealing a significant decrease in homicides.

Newly released data indicates that the total number of killings in London has reached a 14-year low and is currently at its lowest per capita level since record-keeping began. Mayor Khan emphasized, “Despite negative perceptions, the facts paint a different picture.”

London recorded its lowest murder rate per capita in history last year, with the fewest murders among individuals under 25 this century, and one of the lowest homicide numbers in nearly thirty years. The Mayor attributed this success to the implementation of advanced technologies like facial recognition and targeted actions against criminal gangs by the Metropolitan Police, resulting in an additional 1,000 monthly arrests.

In 2025, there were 97 homicides in London, marking an 11% decrease from the previous year and the lowest figure since 2014, even with a population increase of over 500,000 in the same period. London’s homicide rate stands at 1.1 per 100,000 people, notably lower than cities like New York, Berlin, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Toronto.

Mr. Khan emphasized, “The outcomes are evident: fewer lives lost, fewer families devastated. While every murder is tragic, we are committed to utilizing all available resources to combat serious violence.”

The Metropolitan Police detectives achieved a remarkable 95% solve rate last year, further showcasing the effectiveness of their efforts. Lib Peck, the director of London’s violence reduction unit (VRU), highlighted the continued decline in violence and record-low homicide levels, emphasizing the ongoing progress being made.

In response to criticisms from mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham, who claimed that London is no longer safe, Mayor Khan reaffirmed the city’s safety measures and proactive strategies in combating crime effectively. The VRU’s extensive interventions last year, totaling over 550,000 to prevent youth involvement in gangs and violence, further demonstrate London’s commitment to addressing root causes of crime.

Mr. Khan stated, “Our sustained approach of being stringent on crime and addressing its underlying complexities is clearly yielding positive results.”
