Locals in Minneapolis gathered on Sunday morning at the site where Alex Pretti was fatally shot by federal agents just a day earlier. Pretti, known as a neighbor and friend, was hailed as a hero for risking his life to protect a woman under attack. The spot where the 37-year-old ICU nurse lost his life was adorned with flowers, cards, candles, and signs, creating a poignant memorial in the snow.

A poignant sign at the forefront of the memorial read, “We will remember you, Alex. Nurse, Neighbor, Helper, Patriot.” The community mourned around the makeshift memorial, with one woman visibly distraught, expressing a deep connection to Pretti despite not knowing him personally. Emotions ran high as people expressed their grief and solidarity.

Local activist Nero, a prominent figure in immigration protests, highlighted the community’s resilience in the face of tragedy. Despite the pain, he emphasized the unity and determination to stand together in the wake of the tragic event. The crowd around the memorial symbolized a shared sense of loss and commitment to honor Pretti’s memory.

Amidst the somber atmosphere, a woman sang Amazing Grace while a man played a melancholic tune on the saxophone across the street. The community spirit was further exemplified by the local business, Glam Doll Donuts, which remained open and drew support from patrons during this dark time.

Mary Jenson from North Minneapolis reflected on the shock of waking up to the news of Pretti’s death, underscoring the collective determination visible in the candlelight vigils held in his memory. Jenson expressed unwavering resolve and solidarity among the people gathered, emphasizing the community’s readiness to support one another.

Jenson’s words echoed a sentiment of defiance and hope, stating, “They’re picking the wrong town. They’re picking the wrong city.” She emphasized the community’s readiness to help others and the unwavering commitment to stand together in the face of adversity. The show of solidarity and determination gave strength to those present, fueling the resolve to continue advocating for justice and change.
