A waste collector has issued a caution that discarding an item commonly found in nearly every UK household into the bin on collection day could lead to the bin being left unemptied on the curb until the next collection round. This warning was shared on social media recently.

Ashley, known as @Theno1.binman on TikTok, highlights various methods to dispose of an old carpet or rug. He emphasized that carpets are unsuitable for household bins due to their size and weight, being classified as specialist waste. Placing carpets in standard bins can lead to non-collection or penalties.

Most carpets are made from non-biodegradable synthetic fibers like nylon or polypropylene, which do not decompose easily in landfills. Consequently, they are considered challenging to process at recycling centers and landfills, taking centuries to break down fully.

Similar regulations apply to rugs for the same reasons. While some areas may allow smaller rugs in general waste if cut into pieces, many councils explicitly prohibit them from standard black bins.

To properly dispose of an unwanted carpet without upsetting local collectors, individuals have several options. They can contact their local authority to arrange a bulky waste collection, which may involve a fee and depend on council availability.

For those getting new flooring installed, it is advisable to inquire if the installation company offers old carpet removal services, often for an extra charge.

Alternatively, homeowners can utilize free options to get rid of old carpets, such as taking them to local recycling centers with a bulky goods section. Before disposing of the carpet, it is recommended to check with the council for the correct procedure either on their website or via other means.

In cases where the carpet is in decent condition, selling it online through platforms like Facebook groups or Marketplace is an option. Additionally, local animal rescue centers often welcome old carpet donations for insulation purposes.

Apart from carpets, there are several other “banned” items that could cause problems with bin collectors. For instance, crisp packets, despite being marked as recyclable, are not suitable for household recycling collections.

Ashley clarified in a previous video that crisp packets can be recycled at supermarkets, urging individuals to take them there for proper disposal. This applies to chocolate wrappers as well, due to their thin plastic composition and varying materials.
