Today, as I stand at the dispatch box to solemnly recite the names of women believed to have fallen victim to male violence in the past year, the usual formalities of my role fade away. This annual ritual starkly exposes the harsh realities faced by women both in our nation and globally, underscoring the weighty responsibility we bear in safeguarding them.

Acknowledging each name symbolizes a collective failure of our Parliament, institutions, and society in protecting women. On this International Women’s Day, I, alongside a record number of 265 women MPs, reflect on the remarkable achievements of women across various spheres. However, commemorating their successes must also entail recognizing the lived experiences of countless women.

The significance of this day lies not in self-congratulation but in addressing the pervasive issue of violence against women. It is a day that demands introspection and action, not mere performance. This moment is not about me; it belongs to the women who endure threats, abuse, and tragedy daily.

Despite the emotional weight of the occasion, I am committed to honoring these women and advocating for their safety. Our government’s pledge to halve violence against women and girls within a decade is not just policy; it is a vital commitment to saving lives. Protecting women and girls must be at the core of all our endeavors, and I will relentlessly pursue a safer future for them.

I am resolute in my determination to make this country a secure place for women and girls, no matter the challenges we face.
