A young researcher’s life took a dramatic turn during what was supposed to be a leisurely day off while on a research ship off the coast of Chile in 1994. Heather Boswell, then 19, found herself in the midst of a terrifying shark attack that unfolded in real-time on a home video captured by the crew.
On a seemingly calm day in March, Heather was swimming back to the boat when a 16ft great white shark suddenly appeared behind her without warning. In a frantic attempt to escape, the predator caught up with her, latching onto her leg as she struggled to break free. Despite the chaos and bloodshed, Heather later described the surreal experience, likening the shark’s bite to that of a puppy gnawing on her finger.
Distressing footage shows crew members desperately trying to rescue her, using a broom handle to pull her out of the water as panic ensues. The shark struck again, dragging her underwater after biting her a second time, causing shock and horror among the onlookers.
Fortunately, a colleague managed to grab her arms while another struck the shark with a stick, forcing it to release its grip. Heather was then pulled back onto the boat, revealing the extent of her injuries to her shocked teammates.
