Placing your router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal obstructions like fish tanks are known to enhance performance. However, it’s important to note that changes in weather conditions can also impact your connection.
As temperatures increase in late spring and summer, routers may experience added strain, necessitating a cool and well-ventilated location.
Virgin Media explained in a recent blog post how warmer weather can affect broadband performance, stating, “High temperatures during hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.
“While external equipment is designed to endure high temperatures, indoor routers can struggle when exposed to excessive heat.
“Routers require sufficient airflow for optimal operation. If your router is obstructed behind furniture, cramped in a cupboard, placed near a radiator, or exposed to direct sunlight, heat accumulation can occur, particularly during a heatwave. This can lead to slower speeds, dropped connections, or the router self-restarting to cool down.”
To prevent performance issues during warm weather, ensure your router is located in a cool environment. While hot weather can affect performance, other weather factors are less likely to disrupt your internet activities.
Virgin Media emphasized, “Many broadband issues perceived as weather-related actually originate within the home.
“Factors like thick walls, excessive connected devices, and improper router placement often have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your router in a central, open area away from direct sunlight. Additionally, avoid placing the router behind large metal objects or furniture.
After severe weather, check your cables to ensure they are secure and undamaged, as advised by the company.
Lastly, reduce interference by limiting the number of devices connected simultaneously for improved connectivity.
