British tennis star Emma Raducanu has decided to take her time in selecting a new long-term coach following her recent split with coach Francisco Roig. Roig, who previously coached Rafael Nadal for 18 years, became Raducanu’s ninth coach and seventh full-time coach to be let go. The 2021 US Open champion parted ways with Roig due to differences in opinions regarding her playing style.
Since January, Raducanu has been collaborating with her hitting partner Alexis Canter and is content with the current coaching arrangement as she prepares for the Indian Wells tournament in California. While still maintaining a working relationship with coach Mark Petchey on a day-to-day basis, Raducanu acknowledges the challenge of finding a coach who fulfills all the criteria she seeks.
Expressing her views, Raducanu mentioned a desire to reconnect with her natural playing style, emphasizing the importance of regaining her instincts and individuality. She highlighted the difficulty in finding a coach who meets all her requirements but remains open to exploring different coaching options. Raducanu praised the impact of Petchey on her game, citing his valuable contributions both on and off the court.
The young tennis sensation emphasized the need for a coaching relationship that allows her to maintain her unique approach to the game, expressing a preference for collaborative partnerships rather than authoritative coaching styles. Raducanu’s focus remains on staying true to her playing instincts and finding the right balance in her coaching setup as she continues her professional journey.
