A soccer enthusiast who physically assaulted a 13-year-old boy during a game has been issued a three-year ban. Sean Ryan, 21, struck the teenager at the Southport Stadium after the Southport versus Radcliffe FA Cup match on Thursday, September 16.

Ryan, a supporter of Southport, unexpectedly attacked the young boy near The Jack Carr Stand, as per police reports. He was apprehended by stadium personnel and later admitted to committing common assault.

On Thursday, January 15, Ryan, residing in Old Swan, Liverpool, appeared in court at Sefton Magistrates’ Court. He received a three-year football ban, 120 hours of community service, and was instructed to pay £250 in compensation along with court expenses.

The victim, a fan of Radcliffe, was described as “very distressed” and experienced discomfort due to the assault.

Inspector Stuart McLoughlin expressed, “The young victim was severely distressed by the incident, and such violent conduct is unacceptable in football. Fortunately, Ryan confessed promptly, leading to his nationwide football ban.” He further added, “Everyone should feel secure attending football matches without fear. We are committed to identifying and prosecuting individuals engaging in inappropriate and violent behavior at football games.”

The Southport Stadium, also known as the Merseyrail Community Stadium, serves as the home ground for Southport FC at Haig Avenue. With a capacity of 7,000, the stadium has recently undergone enhancements including new seating, corporate amenities, and cladding, supported by club directors, grants, and sponsorships.
