Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new award that will recognize the top DP World Tour player in the Majors each year, excluding himself as a potential winner despite being the recent Masters champion. The DP World Tour recently introduced the Rory McIlroy Award, which will commend the tour member with the most outstanding performance across all four Major Championships annually.

Although McIlroy expressed interest in winning the award, he humorously acknowledged his ineligibility, stating, “It would be cool but I am ineligible for it. I thought it would be better if I wasn’t.” This recognition marks McIlroy as the fifth player to have an award named after him on the DP World Tour, highlighting his on-course accomplishments and his unwavering support for the tour.

Expressing his gratitude for the honor, McIlroy reflected on his journey in golf, mentioning past accolades he aspired to achieve. Looking ahead, McIlroy expressed excitement about the future and the opportunity to present the award to the deserving winner in the upcoming years.

The 36-year-old McIlroy, having recently completed a career Grand Slam, shared his initial reaction to the award proposal following his Masters victory. He emphasized the importance of leaving a lasting legacy within the sport, noting the significance of having an award named after him that future generations can strive for.

McIlroy is currently striving to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships, aiming for a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai win to surpass his current record alongside Ballesteros. Praising the sustained excellence of previous champions, McIlroy acknowledged the competitive landscape of European golf and the challenges faced by iconic players of the past.

Reflecting on his recent performance in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy expressed optimism about his game and the upcoming competition at the DP World Tour Championships. As the world No. 2, McIlroy remains focused on maintaining his form and achieving success on the course.
