Just a short distance from the renowned canals of Venice lies a haunting island with a dark history that has turned it into a deserted place. Poveglia, composed of three smaller islands located south of the Venetian Lagoon, each holds its own eerie past.

One of the islands is shaped like a small octagon and was previously used as a military outpost, another is overgrown with wild vegetation, while the third contains Poveglia’s forsaken ghost town.

In the 18th century, these islands served as a quarantine station for individuals afflicted with the black plague during numerous outbreaks. Initially, two ships carrying suspected plague victims were redirected to Poveglia. The island soon became a breeding ground for the disease as more patients were abandoned there, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and mass burials in plague pits.

Transitioning into the 1900s, Poveglia took on a new grim role as a mental health facility. Local tales recount an asylum director conducting brutal experiments before taking his own life by jumping from the bell tower.

Although there is no concrete proof of the mad doctor’s story, the hospital existed, and reports of apparitions and unexplained occurrences persist. Local residents believe the souls of plague victims and former patients linger among the decaying structures.

Despite its haunting past, Poveglia is off-limits to the public due to the unstable state of its buildings. The island has fallen into disrepair, with collapsed staircases, crumbling roofs, and dense vegetation covering much of the area. While research or filming permits can be obtained with authorization, regular visitors are prohibited due to safety concerns.

One Reddit user claimed to have accessed the island and mentioned feeling a sense of being watched but reported no significant paranormal experiences. The user described the vastness of the island and a word generator displaying “Doctor,” adding to the eerie atmosphere.

Poveglia remains closed to visitors, preserving its eerie allure and tragic history for those willing to explore its unsettling past.
