Millions of Gmail users have received an ‘important’ alert raising concerns about Google’s new AI features scanning their emails. The caution, shared by Lori Greiner, advises users to stay vigilant and protect their privacy. Google’s AI capabilities include smart searches, contextual replies, and email summaries. Although Google claims it does not read messages for personal gain, Greiner urges Gmail users to take action.

Greiner emphasized the need for Gmail users to be aware of AI scanning all types of emails, including financial documents, tax information, and personal conversations. To address this issue, she shared steps to disable AI in Gmail within 30 seconds. By accessing Settings, users can turn off smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, preventing Google from scanning messages. Additionally, users can manage Workspace Smart Features to further restrict data usage for AI.

Despite Google’s assurance that personal data remains private and secure, some users may prefer to disable AI features in Gmail to maintain their privacy. Google clarified that its foundational AI models, such as Gemini, do not train on personal emails. Gemini in Gmail only processes specific tasks like summarizing emails and does not retain data. Users have the option to untick the smart box in Gmail if they are uncomfortable with AI scanning.
