Six individuals have sustained injuries, with two in critical condition, after a violent incident involving a knife occurred at a prominent tourist destination.
The distressing event transpired in Antwerp, Belgium, amidst a pro-Kurdish demonstration near the bustling Operaplein square. Law enforcement promptly apprehended two suspects following the attack. A spokesperson disclosed, “Four individuals were wounded this evening at Operaplein. All sustained stab injuries.
“They were all stabbed, and two of the victims are presently in critical condition. Emergency medical services promptly responded with multiple teams to administer initial aid. Two suspects have been taken into custody.”
Reports indicate that four of the six injured parties were located at Operaplein, while the fifth and sixth victims were found near Rooseveltplaats and Sint-Elisabethstraat.
Photographs captured in the area depict law enforcement officers subduing a suspect before effecting an arrest. Approximately 50 protesters were in attendance at the rally, and police officers were already present at the scene. Witnesses recounted that the demonstration had been peaceful for the majority of the evening.
One witness stated, “People were scattering in all directions; it was complete pandemonium.” Another individual claimed that a passing group suddenly brandished knives and initiated attacks on individuals seated on the building steps.
The assault occurred as the demonstration was wrapping up around 7:30 pm.
A video captured from a nearby building exhibits emergency responders rushing to the area as frightened locals cry out. Another footage shared on social media depicts a victim receiving medical attention on the ground.
Wouter Bruyns, the spokesperson for the Antwerp Police Zone, informed DeMorgen that law enforcement successfully apprehended the two suspects who had integrated with the demonstrators. Flags representing Kurdish and PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) were being displayed during the protest.
An investigation by the police has been initiated, with forensic experts present at the square. Authorities have advised the public to vacate the premises and avoid lingering at Operaplein.
