A medical professional featured on Channel 4’s show, “Live Well with the Drug-Free Doctor,” has highlighted that struggling with snacking is not solely a personal fault. The host of the documentary, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, encouraged individuals facing this challenge to take action. He shared the story of a patient who experienced weight gain despite efforts to control snacking.

According to Dr. Chatterjee, the abundance of unhealthy, calorie-dense foods readily available outside poses a significant challenge. He recommended a simple approach to combat this issue: stick to minimally processed foods that are easily recognizable, similar to what your grandmother would have eaten.

By choosing whole foods, you can stabilize blood sugar levels and avoid overeating triggered by highly processed foods, which are associated with a considerable percentage of premature deaths in the UK. Dr. Chatterjee also advised consumers to check food labels and avoid products with unfamiliar ingredients.

Furthermore, Dr. Chatterjee emphasized that the prevalence of snacking struggles is not accidental, attributing it to the influence and profitability of the ultra-processed food industry, valued at approximately $1.9 trillion worldwide. The documentary highlighted a case where a diabetes diagnosis was linked to excessive consumption of starchy carbohydrates rather than sweets.

Dr. Chatterjee revealed surprising facts about common foods’ impact on blood sugar levels. For instance, a small portion of pasta can affect blood glucose similarly to consuming teaspoons of sugar. Processed white bread and white rice also have significant impacts on blood sugar levels, equivalent to consuming several teaspoons of sugar.
