Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy affirmed that the UK’s stance on Greenland remains firm and unyielding, despite the recent threats from Donald Trump. The US President issued a warning, indicating a plan to impose a 10% tariff on several countries, including the UK, for their objection to his territorial acquisition ambitions. Nandy emphasized the UK’s disapproval of Trump’s actions but stressed that the UK intends to avoid escalating tensions through verbal conflicts with the US.

Keir Starmer publicly denounced Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on NATO allies, labeling it as entirely misguided. Nandy echoed these sentiments, describing the tariffs as inappropriate, unhelpful, and counterproductive during an interview on the BBC. She reiterated the UK’s position, emphasizing that the future of Greenland should be determined by the wishes of its people and those of the Danish kingdom.

Recently, the UK deployed a military officer to Greenland in response to Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic and High North region. Despite this, Trump threatened to impose 10% tariffs on imports from eight countries, including the UK, if they continue to oppose his attempts to acquire Greenland. He further warned of increasing the tariffs to 25% by June 1 if a deal is not reached.

Amidst these tensions, Nandy maintained that the UK values its relationship with the US and emphasized that the UK’s position on Greenland is non-negotiable. She highlighted the importance of collaboration over conflict, stating that it is in the collective interest to work together rather than engage in verbal hostilities.

In response to the threats, French President Emmanuel Macron and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson reaffirmed their countries’ refusal to succumb to intimidation and blackmail. EU ambassadors have been urgently summoned for discussions regarding the escalating situation. The EU’s foreign policy chief warned that tariffs could negatively impact both the US and EU economies, potentially benefiting China and Russia due to divisions among allies.
