In the ongoing search for 11 individuals on a missing plane that is suspected to have crashed, a body has been discovered along with scattered aircraft parts. The aircraft disappeared while approaching a mountainous region on Sulawesi island, Indonesia, during cloudy weather conditions. The rescue team recovered the body of a man in a deep ravine on Mount Bulusaraung’s slope, near where the debris was found.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, the head of Makassar’s Search and Rescue Office, confirmed the body retrieval operation is currently in progress. Additional wreckage, including parts of the plane’s frame and passenger seats, as well as a visually identified engine, have been located by the teams.
Though the body has not been identified yet, it is believed to be from the turboprop ATR 42-500 aircraft that vanished from radar en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar. The aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, was carrying eight crew members and three passengers from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry for a maritime surveillance mission when it disappeared.
Search efforts have intensified after the discovery of major sections of the plane, aiding in narrowing down the search area. Ground and air rescue teams are facing challenges due to adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy fog, which are hindering their progress.
With over 100 personnel and specialized search units deployed to the area, the search teams are persevering through the tough conditions to locate any potential survivors. Indonesia, known for its reliance on air and sea transport across its vast island network, has experienced various transportation accidents in recent years, highlighting the importance of safety measures in the region.
