Villagers in India are facing a terrifying situation as a wild elephant, responsible for 22 deaths, roams freely. The residents of the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand have been forced to evacuate their homes and seek refuge on rooftops to escape the one-tusked male elephant’s destructive rampage.

The elephant, believed to be in its mating phase called musth, is displaying heightened aggression, typical during this period. Since the start of the year, the elephant has claimed the lives of over 20 individuals, including children and an infant.

To address the crisis, Indian authorities have mobilized 80 forest officers to track and tranquilize the elephant. While most villagers are hiding in fear, a few have joined efforts to end the rampage before more lives are lost.

Aditya Narayan, a division forest officer, noted the unusual behavior of the elephant during its musth phase, emphasizing the severity of its attacks. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, elephants rarely attack humans without provocation, usually doing so out of a sense of threat and defense.

The organization highlights the increasing “human-elephant conflict” due to habitat encroachment, leading to competition for resources. As climate change alters landscapes, elephants are pushed into new territories, intensifying conflicts with humans over food and space.
