New data has shown that 76% of car theft cases remained unsolved last year, highlighting a concerning trend in law enforcement.

Statistics from the House of Commons library indicate that the Metropolitan police had the poorest performance, leaving 88% of car theft incidents unresolved. Other police forces such as the British Transport Police, South Yorkshire, City of London, Sussex, and Warwickshire also reported high rates of unsolved car thefts, with over 80% of cases remaining open. Across England and Wales, a staggering 35 out of 44 police forces had a total unsolved rate of 60%.

In a positive development, the Home Office reported a 12% decrease in vehicle crime in the year leading to June 2025, with a notable 7% reduction in vehicle theft. Additionally, new legislation is set to prohibit electronic devices used to bypass vehicle security, with potential penalties of up to five years in prison for offenders.

Responding to the concerning data, the Liberal Democrats have urged the establishment of a specialized team at the National Crime Agency. This team would leverage data from various sources such as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, insurance records, and intelligence from law enforcement and border control to target organized car crime networks.

Max Wilkinson MP, the Lib Dem home affairs spokesman, criticized the lack of support for crime victims and called for more proactive measures to address the issue. He emphasized the need for a crackdown on car theft to dismantle criminal networks that have long evaded justice.

A spokesperson from the Home Office highlighted the devastating impact of vehicle theft on individuals, families, businesses, and the wider community. Acknowledging past shortcomings, they reassured the public of ongoing efforts by the government and law enforcement to combat vehicle theft through legislative measures and collaboration with industry stakeholders.
