A significant alteration in how UK residents browse the internet has been implemented recently, leading to a notable shift in the usage of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The updated regulations, introduced by UK regulator Ofcom, now require individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites.

The purpose of this change is to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content, as statistics from Ofcom reveal that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult sites.

Ofcom highlighted the importance of this change, stating that it is a crucial measure to safeguard children from harmful online content. However, some UK internet users seem reluctant to provide their personal information, such as names, addresses, and financial details, when attempting to visit adult-oriented websites.

As a result of the new regulations, there has been a significant surge in VPN usage. VPNs are tools that conceal IP addresses and encrypt online activities. They can also be utilized to mask one’s location, enabling users to access content from different countries, such as the US version of Netflix or UK services like Sky Go and BBC iPlayer when traveling abroad.

While it is unclear if the Ofcom restrictions are driving more individuals to switch to VPNs, one VPN service reported an unprecedented increase in users since July 25, coinciding with the implementation of the rules. Proton VPN disclosed a remarkable hourly rise of over 1,400% compared to its usual baseline.

Additionally, several VPN platforms have experienced a surge in popularity, with five VPN services currently ranking among the top 10 most downloaded apps in UK app stores.

Although Ofcom’s update is a crucial step in protecting children online, there are concerns regarding the implications of adults having to disclose sensitive information to unfamiliar companies.

Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, highlighted the potential privacy and security risks associated with collecting sensitive data like ID uploads and financial information under the Online Safety Act.

Individuals considering using a VPN are advised to choose a reputable provider and avoid free versions that may compromise data security. It is important to be cautious and prioritize privacy when selecting a VPN service.
