A significant transition is underway this year that may impact access to data on devices for some individuals. The UK is phasing out its 3G service in favor of the faster and more dependable 4G and 5G networks. Leading UK providers such as EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already deactivated their 3G services.

While most users will not experience any changes, older and more vulnerable customers might face disruptions if they have not upgraded their devices. Considering the critical role phones play in connecting people, especially for the elderly, this switch-off raises concerns.

To address these challenges, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Age UK to raise awareness about the 3G phase-out in the UK. The Charity Director at Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, emphasized the importance of supporting those affected by the transition.

O2 aims to complete the discontinuation of its 3G signal by the year’s end, affecting users with non-4G or 5G compatible devices, limiting access to services like WhatsApp. The process has already commenced, starting with towns like Durham, followed by Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, with Torquay next in line before the complete shutdown.

Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to offer additional assistance to older users needing to upgrade their devices for continued mobile data usage post-3G shutdown. Age UK will provide informative content to aid older individuals in understanding the transition.

In-person awareness sessions will be conducted by Age UK to support disadvantaged older individuals. These services are also available to customers of providers operating on the O2 network, such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile.

Virgin Media O2 will directly contact customers without 4G or 5G devices, offering free compatible devices to vulnerable users and discounts on new handsets for others. Phones with only 3G connectivity will still support 2G networks post-switch-off, allowing voice calls and text messaging.

Despite the switch-off, the impact is expected to be minimal, as Virgin Media O2 reports that its 3G network carries less than 2% of all network data. For those seeking support or information, both providers and Age UK are available to assist in navigating the transition.
