The United Kingdom has recently acquired a cutting-edge weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h.

Known as the RCH 155, this revolutionary mounted weapon can be attached to a BOXER armored vehicle and has the ability to engage targets up to 70km away. Through a £52 million agreement between the UK and Germany, the RCH 155 provides a significant enhancement to British military capabilities, drawing valuable insights from recent conflicts, particularly in Ukraine.

This groundbreaking technology boasts an impressive operational range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to the distance from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery systems that require setup before firing, the RCH 155 can shoot while in motion, offering a rapid and agile response to threats, making it challenging for adversaries to counter. With advanced automation, the weapon can be operated by just two crew members and engage targets from any direction without repositioning.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the significance of this new artillery system, highlighting its capacity to fire on the move and learn from past experiences in conflicts like Ukraine. The deployment of the RCH 155 aligns with strategic defense priorities and underscores the importance of agility and firepower in modern warfare.

Currently, soldiers utilize the 14 Archer artillery systems as interim replacements for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. Under the collaborative contract with Germany, both nations will exchange test data and resources to ensure the delivery of top-tier equipment for their respective armed forces.

Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, commended the joint initiative with Germany, citing it as a demonstration of effective collaboration under the Trinity House Agreement. The RCH 155 signifies a significant advancement in mobile artillery capability, combining potent firepower with rapid repositioning capabilities. This partnership not only enhances the technological prowess of soldiers but also strengthens the interoperability between UK and German forces, crucial for NATO’s collective defense efforts.

In recent statements, Defence Secretary John Healey reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and bolstering military readiness in response to evolving threats. The launch of a new military intelligence service underscores the government’s proactive approach to address challenges posed by cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and global security risks.
