The UK government has indicated that current peace negotiations concerning Ukraine are in a critical phase, emphasizing that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must cease hostilities and participate constructively.

This statement follows remarks made by US President Donald Trump less than a day ago, suggesting that an agreement to end the conflict is nearing completion. President Trump disclosed progress in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during their meeting in Florida over the weekend, stating that negotiations on a security assurance are almost finalized, hovering around 95% completion.

Both leaders acknowledged the presence of challenging issues that still need resolution. A spokesperson for Keir Starmer mentioned, “While we are optimistic about achieving a peace agreement that secures a fair and enduring peace, recent Russian attacks on Ukraine have been devastating.”

The spokesperson continued, “If Putin genuinely desires peace, he must halt the violence, terminate his military campaign, and actively engage in the peace negotiations currently on the table. His commitment will be judged based on his actions.” Additionally, the spokesperson stated, “We have been collaborating extensively with Ukrainian and American counterparts for several weeks to finalize an agreement that prevents future Russian invasions.”

Yesterday, President Zelensky revealed that the United States has proposed security guarantees for Ukraine spanning 15 years within a prospective peace initiative. However, to deter Russian aggression, he expressed a preference for an American commitment lasting up to 50 years.

He emphasized, “Without security assurances, realistically, the conflict will persist.” Negotiations are anticipated to intensify next month, aligning with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Although specific details of the security guarantees have not been disclosed, President Zelensky mentioned the involvement of “partners” in the arrangement. However, potential complications may arise as Putin has expressed opposition to the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine.

Reports indicate that Russian forces are making advancements in the eastern Donetsk region and continuing their offensive in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Putin is expected to engage in discussions with the US President soon, while it remains uncertain whether Putin will communicate directly with President Zelensky.

During a recent briefing, President Trump expressed optimism about the progress, stating, “I truly believe we are closer than ever before – with both sides. There were times when one party was close and the other wasn’t, but now they both seem aligned
