WhatsApp is taking action against online criminals by removing nearly 7 million accounts used for scams. The platform, owned by Meta, aims to protect users from fraudsters who try to deceive them into sharing personal information and money.

The rise of these fraudulent activities on WhatsApp has prompted the platform to intensify its efforts in safeguarding its users. Criminal scammers exploit people’s financial concerns by offering unrealistic deals and pyramid schemes to make quick profits.

In the first half of this year, WhatsApp identified and banned over 6.8 million accounts associated with scam operations as part of its proactive measures to combat fraudulent activities. Additionally, the platform is developing new features to prevent cybercriminals from operating on its platform effectively.

One of the upcoming features is a safety overview that will alert users when an unknown contact tries to add them to a group chat. This new tool aims to mitigate the risks posed by strangers who may attempt to lure users with investment opportunities or urgent payment demands.

WhatsApp advises users to exercise caution and follow three key tips for staying safe on the platform:

– **PAUSE:** Take your time before responding to unfamiliar messages. Evaluate whether the sender is known to you and if their request seems legitimate.
– **QUESTION:** Scrutinize the nature of the request. Beware of offers that sound too good to be true, requests for money or personal information, and high-paying job offers that require minimal effort. Rushed demands for immediate action are often red flags for scams.
– **VERIFY:** Verify the identity of the sender, especially if they claim to be a friend or family member. Contact them through alternative communication channels to confirm their authenticity.

By adopting these precautionary measures and being vigilant, WhatsApp users can protect themselves from falling victim to scams and fraudulent schemes.
