A significant shift is underway in the UK regarding how phone calls are made, urging homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines, which have served as a communication lifeline for many years, are being phased out in favor of a new technology called Digital Voice that utilizes broadband for making calls.
This upgrade not only aligns with modern requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages. The transition to Digital Voice, set to commence in January 2027, is prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign, spearheaded by Clare Balding, to encourage households to ensure their landlines are prepared for the digital era.
Research has revealed that people in the UK often procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that operational systems do not require immediate attention if they are still functioning. Clare Balding emphasized the importance of promptly responding to provider communications to ensure uninterrupted landline services, assuring that BT will provide guidance throughout the process.
Customers are likely to retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable during the transition, with no anticipated increase in bills. Most homes will simply need to connect their existing phones to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket, eliminating the need for engineer visits.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, highlighted the ease of overlooking messages from service providers but emphasized the necessity of taking action to maintain essential connections during the transition to digital landlines. The upgrade aims to enhance the country’s communication infrastructure, providing more reliable, secure technology to keep individuals connected to vital services.
BT has advised customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support is in place. Digital Voice, BT’s new home phone service, eliminates copper connections in favor of broadband technology, offering modern features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones, enhancing call quality and user experience.
The transition to Digital Voice is anticipated to have minimal impact on most households’ phone usage, as the cost of the new service is bundled with broadband offerings at no extra charge. Upgrading to Digital Voice promises improved call quality and modern features, ensuring a seamless transition to the digital age.
