Mini Eggs are a personal favorite of mine, and I am always excited when Easter comes around because it means it’s time to indulge in these delightful treats. The combination of aroma, crunch, and charming pastel colors make them one of the top choices for Easter sweets. However, being a branded product, they can be a bit pricey and sometimes hard to find during the season. To explore more affordable alternatives, I decided to try out various supermarket own-brand versions to see if any could rival the original.
Most major supermarkets offer their own versions of these beloved Easter candies, which are generally more cost-effective than the branded Mini Eggs. I sampled packets from Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda, eager to see how they compared to the classic Cadbury’s Mini Eggs.
After testing all the options, one particular brand stood out, surpassing even the original in taste. I was so impressed that I plan to stock up on as many packets as possible before Easter arrives.
Starting with the authentic Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar sugary scent and delightful crunch of the chocolate shells confirmed why they are so popular. While they are a bit harder to find closer to Easter, they typically retail for around £2 for an 80g pack, equivalent to about £2.50 per 100g.
Comparing them to Asda’s own-brand milk chocolate mini eggs, priced at just £1.12 for an 80g pack or £1.40 per 100g, the taste was noticeably less premium. They lacked the same sweet aroma and the chocolate texture didn’t match up to the original, landing them in the middle of the ranking with a score of 2.5/5.
Next, the Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, offered a budget-friendly option but fell short in taste compared to the top contenders, earning a rating of one out of five.
The Choceur Mini Eggs from Aldi and Lidl, priced at £3.39 for 256g, presented a larger pack size but were rated as mid-tier due to the somewhat bland chocolate flavor. They received a score of two out of five.
On the other hand, M&S’s speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars have been making waves on social media. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag, or £1.94 per 100g, these eggs impressed with their generous size, perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio, and addictive filling, even surpassing the Cadbury’s Mini Eggs. They received a top score of five stars.
Overall, if you are looking for a quality alternative to Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, M&S’s own-brand eggs are definitely worth a try.
