Conor McGregor has officially stated that he will not participate in the UFC’s event at the White House. Initially rumored to headline a bout against Michael Chandler on President Donald Trump’s front lawn on June 14, McGregor is now anticipated to return to the octagon in July instead. UFC CEO Dana White is set to reveal the lineup for the White House card on Saturday, but McGregor’s name is now likely to be absent, with his comeback slated for July 11.
In an interview with Smash Cast, McGregor expressed his excitement about the White House event but acknowledged the decision to postpone his fight against Chandler to a later date, possibly during International Fight Week. He mentioned his respect for Chandler and the preparation he had undertaken for their matchup over the past two years, despite feeling somewhat puzzled by the change in plans.
McGregor confirmed that his return to the cage will be at welterweight, emphasizing his increased size and readiness for any opponent offered to him. He revealed his eagerness to compete and mentioned his manager’s upcoming meeting in Las Vegas to negotiate a potential fight contract.
As McGregor steps back, the spotlight could shift to Jon Jones potentially making his return to the cage at the White House event, with a potential matchup against former middleweight and light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, who recently vacated his 205-pound title.
