Three individuals lost their lives in a shooting incident in a rural town in New South Wales. Authorities have initiated a significant operation to apprehend the suspected shooter.
The tragic event occurred when two women and a man were shot on Walker Street, close to Yelkin Street, in Lake Cargelligo within the state’s Central West region around 4:40 pm on Thursday. Another man was swiftly taken to the hospital and is currently in stable but serious condition.
Law enforcement officers from the Central West Police District responded to the scene following reports of the shooting. The alleged shooter, who reportedly has an apprehended violence order against him, fled the area in a council-owned vehicle.
Efforts are underway to locate the vehicle as part of the ongoing search operation. A crime scene has been established, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is in progress.
Authorities have advised the public to steer clear of the area, while residents have been instructed to remain indoors as the operation unfolds. Further updates will be provided by the police as more information becomes available.
Lake Cargelligo, a small town approximately three hours southwest of Dubbo, boasts a population of around 1,500 people and is renowned for water activities like sailing, kayaking, water-skiing, and swimming.
A local resident, identified only as Manisha, recounted to Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph the heavy presence of police cars and ambulances throughout the town. Roy Butler, a state parliament member, expressed sorrow over the incident, labeling it as “tragic news” for the town, located 370 miles (600km) west of Sydney.
The shooting incident coincided with a national day of mourning as Australia commemorates the 15 individuals who lost their lives in a shooting at a Hannukah celebration in Sydney on December 14. In response to the tragedy, the Australian parliament recently enacted new gun control measures.
