Keir Starmer has responded to Donald Trump’s recent controversial proposal to impose tariffs on countries, including the UK, if they continue to resist his efforts to acquire Greenland.
Trump stated that he would implement a 10% tariff on imports from these countries, escalating to 25% if his Greenland acquisition plans are not met by June.
In reaction, the UK Prime Minister reiterated that Greenland is part of Denmark and emphasized that decisions regarding its future lie with the Greenlanders and Danes. He highlighted the importance of Arctic Security within NATO and denounced the idea of imposing tariffs on allies working towards collective security.
Trump justified his stance by claiming that various countries, including China and Russia, are interested in Greenland, emphasizing the strategic significance of the region for the United States.
The UK recently deployed a military officer to Greenland in response to Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic.
French President Macron affirmed France’s commitment to sovereignty and independence, supporting Denmark’s actions in Greenland and rejecting any form of intimidation or threats.
Lib Dem leader Ed Davey criticized Trump’s tariff threats, urging the UK to stand firm against such actions and collaborate with European allies to counter this behavior.
Kemi Badenoch condemned the proposed tariffs, emphasizing that decisions concerning Greenland should be made by its people and not imposed by external forces. Nigel Farage also opposed the tariffs, highlighting potential negative impacts on both the UK and the US.
