Nicky Henderson has finally put an end to the speculation surrounding Constitution Hill’s participation in the upcoming Cheltenham Festival. There has been much debate about the future path of this highly skilled hurdler, who had previously been undefeated over obstacles until a fall in the 2025 Champion Hurdle led to a series of disappointing performances with three falls in the last four hurdles.

In a bid to make a decision, Henderson took Constitution Hill to Southwell for a flat race over 1m4f on the all-weather track, where he impressively won by a significant margin in front of a record crowd of over 3,000. This victory showcased his potential as a competitive flat horse.

Following the Southwell win, Henderson expressed concerns about the risks involved in running Constitution Hill at Cheltenham. Despite the positive outcome at Southwell causing him a dilemma, Henderson described the decision as a difficult ‘50-50’ call, indicating that a final verdict would be reached after discussions with owner Michael Buckley.

The outcome of a scheduled schooling session in Lambourn on Wednesday played a crucial role in the decision-making process. However, signs were evident when Constitution Hill’s odds began to drift in the Champion Hurdle betting, leading to him being replaced as the favorite and odds shortening to 1-14. Subsequently, Henderson confirmed that Constitution Hill would not be competing at Cheltenham, signaling a potential shift from jumping to focusing on flat racing.

In an official statement, Henderson and Buckley acknowledged the extensive deliberation over Constitution Hill’s future, ultimately deciding to withdraw from the Unibet Champion Hurdle. The statement highlighted the appreciation for the support received from fans and the acknowledgment of Constitution Hill’s promising future in flat racing.

Despite the disappointment of not seeing Constitution Hill defend his crown, the decision was made with the horse’s well-being in mind. Henderson expressed gratitude for the highs and lows experienced in Constitution Hill’s jumping career, noting the exciting journey so far.

Cheltenham has extended an invitation for Constitution Hill to parade on Champion Hurdle day, providing an opportunity for National Hunt supporters to bid farewell to the remarkable hurdler. Constitution Hill’s impressive winning streak, including victories in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Champion Hurdle, marks a memorable chapter in his racing career.
