Team GB speed skater Niall Treacy initially claimed sixth place in the short track men’s 1500m final but was later relegated to ninth due to a collision that also affected two other competitors. The referee’s decision to penalize Treacy resulted in him dropping positions in the final, expanded to accommodate two additional athletes due to earlier crashes.
Despite finishing nearly 40 seconds ahead of the seventh-placed skater from China, Shoaong Liu, who was involved in the collision, Treacy missed the podium opportunity. Another Chinese skater, Long Sun, had to withdraw due to injury. The gold medal was secured by Jens van ‘T Wout from the Netherlands, continuing their strong performance in the sport, with Korea’s Hwang Daehoen and Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs completing the podium.
Former Team GB skater Wilf O’Reilly expressed disappointment at Treacy’s misfortune, emphasizing the importance of avoiding trouble in such races. Treacy himself maintained composure, attributing the incident to his focus on staying with the leading pack, which led to him not seeing the skaters behind him. Despite the disqualification decision and ensuing social media backlash from Team GB supporters, Treacy reflected positively on his performance, expressing pride in his achievement of reaching the Olympic final.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Treacy acknowledged the disappointment of the outcome but highlighted his pride in his performance and the support from his fellow athletes and fans.
