A grieving father shouted three words upon the execution of the man responsible for his son’s death. Charles Victor Thompson, aged 55, was the first individual in the United States to face capital punishment this year for the fatal shooting of his former girlfriend and her new partner. Thompson, a double murderer who had previously escaped prison, met his fate 28 years after committing the heinous crimes. Following the murders of Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, in April 1998, Thompson spent close to three decades on death row.

In his final moments, the killer implored the families of his victims for forgiveness, expressing a desire for healing and closure. However, Mr. Cain’s father’s response was stark: “He’s in hell.” Prior to his execution, a spiritual counselor offered prayers for three minutes, leading Thompson to remark, “There are no winners in this situation.” Acknowledging the lasting impact of his actions, the killer apologized and urged others to keep faith in Jesus.

As the lethal injection was administered, the murderer gasped loudly before taking a series of breaths that eventually ceased. He was officially declared dead 22 minutes later. District Attorney Sean Teare of Harris County noted, “This chapter is closed. It was justice a long time coming.”

The relationship between Thompson and Ms. Hayslip turned turbulent in the mid-1990s, leading to their separation due to his possessive and abusive behavior. Subsequently, Ms. Hayslip began dating Mr. Cain, and on the tragic night of the incident in Houston, Texas, Thompson intruded into her residence, resulting in a fatal altercation between the men. Despite medical efforts, Mr. Cain succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Ms. Hayslip passed away a week later in the hospital.

Court documents revealed that both the Hayslip and Cain families had endured a quarter-century-long wait for justice. After a new sentencing trial in November 2005, Thompson received another death sentence from a jury, following the overturning of his original one. Escaping from the Harris County Jail shortly after the resentencing, Thompson’s final moments reflected a somber conclusion to a tragic and protracted legal battle.
