Britain may face an increased threat from the Islamic State terrorist group following clashes in formerly Kurdish-held areas of Syria. Conflict between Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces and government troops has resulted in the release of numerous ISIS prisoners, raising concerns about potential escapes from Syria’s al-Hol prison, which houses a significant number of ISIS detainees.

Reports suggest that several female ISIS prisoners may have already escaped from the facility in northeast Syria. Among the thousands of individuals linked to ISIS detained there, including 6,000 foreign fighters, some could be of British origin. There are indications that escaped prisoners are attempting to cross into Iraq.

The potential release of thousands more ISIS prisoners, including prominent figures like Shamima Begum, poses a heightened security risk to the UK. The Syrian Democratic Forces had long cautioned about the vulnerability of these overcrowded camps housing local and foreign ISIS detainees to attacks by the terrorist network.

Following the successful expulsion of ISIS from Raqqa, Syria, in 2018-19 with US support, the situation has shifted. The withdrawal of US special forces under former President Donald Trump and the emergence of a Turkey-backed Syrian government have altered the dynamics, endangering the Kurdish forces who had been key allies in the fight against ISIS.

A security source warned that the resurgence of ISIS could lead to increased threats in the West, including the UK, through potential attacks and radicalization efforts. Tensions between the SDF, Syrian military, and the government have escalated since President Ahmed al-Sharaa took office, aiming to unify the country post-civil war, though Kurdish autonomy remains a point of contention.

Despite ceasefire agreements, clashes persist, particularly around former ISIS strongholds like Raqqa, indicating a broader conflict. Recent escapes from other ISIS prisons further highlight the security risks posed by the group’s activities.

Analysts have raised concerns over the escalating threats posed by ISIS resurgence in Syria, emphasizing the potential for increased radicalization and attacks globally. The ongoing clashes between the Syrian government and SDF coincide with a resurgence of ISIS activity, underscoring the volatile security situation in the region.
