A young girl, Jacqueline Torres-Garcia, known as Mimi, tragically passed away under harrowing circumstances, with an autopsy revealing that she had only consumed a single blueberry before her death. Her lifeless body was discovered on October 8 in the basement of an unoccupied residence in New Britain, Connecticut. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s report disclosed that Jacqueline was severely malnourished and had experienced muscle atrophy at the time of her demise.

The examination unveiled distressing details about the 11-year-old’s physical state, indicating minimal body fat and a weight of merely 27 pounds. Her body, found curled up tightly in a fetal position, was significantly decomposed. Additionally, traces of diphenhydramine, a component of Benadryl, were detected in her system without any medical justification for its use.

Karla Garcia, Jacqueline’s mother, has been charged with murder and various associated offenses. Despite pleading not guilty, she is currently detained on a $5 million bond and is set to appear in court on January 30. Law enforcement asserts that Garcia intentionally withheld food from her daughter for an extended period and subjected her to prolonged mistreatment, admitting to not feeding Jacqueline for around two weeks before her passing.

Moreover, Garcia’s former partner, Jonatan Nanita, also faces charges of murder and conspiracy. Allegations suggest his involvement in restraining the child and disposing of her remains. Nanita has not entered a plea and has requested a probable cause hearing. Investigators believe that Jacqueline perished in September 2024 while residing with her family in Farmington, where her body was concealed in the basement before being relocated to New Britain.

Reports indicate that Jacqueline was bound, denied access to the restroom, and grossly neglected. Although no recent fractures or severe injuries were identified, the lack of sustenance and prolonged captivity are cited as causes of her death. Prior to the tragic events, Jacqueline had resided with her paternal grandparents until her mother regained custody in 2022. Subsequently, she was withdrawn from public school and homeschooled, complicating efforts to monitor her well-being.

The New Britain school district confirmed Jacqueline’s attendance at local schools up to fifth grade before her mother’s decision to remove her. Furthermore, authorities allege that Garcia deceived the state Department of Children and Families post-Jacqueline’s demise by using another child to impersonate her daughter during a video call. Jacqueline’s father, Victor Torres, expressed his shock at learning of his daughter’s death through law enforcement and intends to file a lawsuit against the Department of Children and Families due to alleged negligence.

Facing a slew of charges, including murder with special circumstances, conspiracy, mistreatment of a minor, unlawful confinement, and more, Garcia and Nanita are embroiled in a complex legal battle. Additionally, Jacqueline’s aunt, Jackelyn Garcia, has been apprehended for purportedly witnessing the abuse and failing to intervene, resulting in charges of cruelty, unlawful restraint, recklessness, and endangerment. She is in custody on a $1 million bond as investigations continue.
