Virgin Media O2 customers are being warned about a new email scam that has surfaced following the closure of O2’s 3G mobile platform earlier this year. The outdated 3G technology has been phased out, and users are being transitioned to faster 4G and 5G services. While most customers are unaffected by this transition, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the situation.

The fraudulent emails, designed to look authentic with official branding, claim that a SIM card upgrade is necessary for customers. The subject line of the email reads “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.” However, Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these emails are not legitimate and advises customers not to engage with them.

Customers are urged to be cautious and not click on any links or reply to these emails. Instead, they should delete the messages immediately. To report any suspicious emails, customers can forward them to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.

This phishing scam aims to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive personal information by impersonating trusted organizations. In some cases, scammers might even send a SIM card via courier and request the recipient to activate it with a four-digit PIN. The email may also prompt users to log in to the O2 app with a provided password and contains a “Contact Us” button that could lead victims directly to the fraudsters.

If successful, scammers could potentially access a customer’s private account or gather enough personal data to compromise other online accounts, leading to identity theft and financial loss. It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and verify the legitimacy of emails from service providers by contacting them directly through official channels. Seeking a second opinion from a trusted source before taking any action is advisable in such situations.
