The UK government has hinted that it would not mourn the fall of the Iranian regime. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described Iran as a hostile nation aligned with Russia. Amid ongoing protests in Iran calling for regime change, at least 116 individuals have lost their lives in the unrest.

Alexander emphasized the UK’s long-standing view of Iran as a security threat in the Middle East and globally, citing the regime’s repressive stance towards its own people. She stressed the need to quell the violence in Iran promptly.

Regarding Iran’s actions, Alexander highlighted its destabilizing influence and cooperation with Vladimir Putin to circumvent sanctions, suggesting a lack of sympathy from the UK if the Iranian government collapses.

The Labour representative expressed the UK’s preference for a peaceful transition of power in Iran, promoting fundamental freedoms and democratic values for the Iranian populace. The presence of a limited number of British citizens in Iran was noted.

Iran’s parliament speaker issued a warning, stating that the US and Israel would be legitimate targets if the US decides to strike Iran, as threatened by President Donald Trump. The speaker’s remarks were made amidst chaos in the Iranian parliament with chants of “Death to America.”

President Trump voiced support for the Iranian protesters seeking freedom, while reports suggested he had been presented with military options for a potential strike on Iran, though no decision had been finalized.

Alexander refrained from commenting on foreign policy matters of other nations but expressed concern over the violence against peaceful protesters in Iran, urging Iranian authorities to safeguard citizens’ lives, uphold fundamental freedoms, and exercise restraint in responding to demonstrations.

The US State Department cautioned against underestimating President Trump’s resolve, emphasizing his commitment to follow through on his statements. The decision of whether to engage in war would ultimately lie with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

US military presence in the Middle East was reaffirmed to defend forces, partners, allies, and US interests across the region.
