The Defence Secretary is determined to put an end to the issue of substandard military housing after completing upgrades to 1,000 homes ahead of schedule. John Healey has now directed an additional 250 military properties to receive priority renovations in the coming months, marking a 25% increase from the initial target set eight months ago. The housing improvement initiative has so far enhanced nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and over 50 in Scotland.
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror at a barracks in Colchester, Mr. Healey emphasized that the progress made was beneficial for morale, retention, and promised to eradicate the longstanding problem of inadequate military housing. He expressed, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the homes where we expect our service personnel and their families to reside.”
Mr. Healey highlighted the government’s actions, stating, “Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family homes into public ownership, ending a detrimental Tory privatization scheme. We have initiated a £9 billion investment over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild 90% of Forces family homes.” He further confirmed the achievement of the initial target of renovating 1,000 homes ahead of schedule, ensuring more families have suitable accommodations this Christmas.
The refurbishments across the country include new flooring, upgraded heating systems, roof repairs, and installations of new bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors. Mr. Healey stressed that these improvements not only enhance morale but also contribute to retaining personnel within the armed forces.
Cpl Jack Crean, along with his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, recently relocated to one of the newly renovated homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed their delight, saying, “We are thrilled to be in our new home for Christmas. Everyone is much happier here, especially Charlie. Living in a modern house is a significant improvement for our family, providing peace of mind knowing that they are in a comfortable and updated environment.”
