A train accident in Barcelona has resulted in the death of the train driver and injuries to many passengers today. This incident occurred just after a tragic train collision in southern Spain that claimed the lives of 42 individuals and left numerous others wounded.
According to officials, the recent derailment in Barcelona was caused by a retaining wall collapsing onto the tracks. Reports from local media indicate that around 20 people have been hurt in the crash.
This event coincides with the start of a three-day mourning period in the country for the victims of the catastrophic train crash that took place on Sunday. The collision involved a northbound and southbound train carrying nearly 500 passengers collectively, which crashed near Adamuz in Spain’s Córdoba province, resulting in significant loss of life and damage.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the Barcelona crash, with fifteen ambulances and 35 fire crews rushing to the accident site, as reported by the Spanish news agency EFE. Firefighters worked to rescue individuals trapped in the train carriages.
The Barcelona accident occurred on a commuter train traveling between Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Gelida, approximately 40 kilometers from Barcelona, amidst heavy rainfall in the area.
In the Sunday crash, which took place at 7:45 p.m., the tail end of a train carrying 289 passengers from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with an incoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, as confirmed by rail operator Adif.
Tragically, among the casualties in the collision were the parents of a young girl who had attended a performance of “The Lion King” in the Spanish capital earlier that evening.
Fidel Saez, who lost his mother in the crash, shared that his brother, children, and nephew survived the ordeal. He recounted how his brother miraculously managed to save the children by guiding them out through a window, emphasizing the kindness and goodness of their late mother.
The front section of the train traveling from Madrid to Huelva bore the brunt of the impact, causing its first two carriages to derail and tumble down a slope, with bodies thrown hundreds of meters from the crash site, as stated by Andalusia regional President Juanma Moren.
