In a recent press conference at Downing Street, Keir Starmer cautioned against the detrimental impact of a potential trade war, particularly in light of Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs following his Greenland dispute. The US President has indicated imposing 10% tariffs on nations, including the UK, for opposing his bid to acquire Greenland. Moreover, Trump has hinted at raising NATO allies’ levies to 25% if a deal on Greenland is not struck by June 1.

Addressing the issue from No10, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity for calm discussions among allies to resolve the Greenland matter appropriately. Starmer underscored the importance of Greenland’s future being determined solely by the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. Expressing disagreement with Trump’s tariff threats, Starmer stressed the significance of diplomatic solutions over resorting to a trade war.

Following the weekend’s developments, Starmer, along with other UK allies, denounced the White House’s actions, cautioning against the potential negative consequences on international relations. Despite differences on Greenland, Starmer highlighted the enduring alliance between the US and the UK while advocating for peaceful dialogues to address disagreements.

In response to questions about potential retaliatory measures, Starmer rejected the notion of engaging in a tariff war, emphasizing the mutual interest in avoiding such scenarios. He also confirmed plans to engage with President Trump in the near future to seek constructive resolutions to the ongoing tensions.

Starmer reiterated the core principle that decisions regarding Greenland’s status should be left to its residents and Denmark, emphasizing the need for respectful partnerships rather than coercion within alliances. Overall, while acknowledging differences, Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to working closely with the US to safeguard national interests and uphold shared values.
