The owner of the top pub in Britain is cautioning about an impending surge in expenses. George Greenaway and his spouse, Louise, are elated as their establishment, Tamworth Tap, has been recognized as the National Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale for the third time. Despite opening just eight years ago in a former shop in Staffordshire, Mr. Greenaway, who transitioned from an IT security consultant to a pub owner, has managed to achieve remarkable success.
However, like many other pubs, Tamworth Tap is grappling with escalating costs and evolving drinking patterns, which have already led to over 2,000 pub closures since 2020. Projections indicate that without immediate intervention, the closure rate could skyrocket to six pubs per day in 2026 from the current one per day.
The Mirror’s “Your Pub Needs You campaign” has been at the forefront of advocating for the significance of local pubs in the community. Amid concerns over a potential rise in business rates starting April, the Labour party has pledged to revamp property taxes to deliver lasting relief to pubs and other businesses.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to unveil a relief package worth around £300 million to aid the pub sector in adjusting to the end of pandemic support measures, particularly by alleviating the burden of soaring business rates. Mr. Greenaway pointed out the challenges faced by pubs, including rising living wages, energy costs, and shifting consumption habits, emphasizing the need for substantial support to weather the storm.
The Tamworth Tap is set to see a substantial increase in its rates bill, adding significant financial strain. Mr. Greenaway remains hopeful that promised assistance from Labour will materialize to alleviate the burden on struggling pubs, expressing frustration over the rising rates on town center premises despite the broader struggles of high streets across the country.
From its humble beginnings, Tamworth Tap has expanded to occupy three interconnected buildings over three floors, featuring a microbrewery taphouse and a captivating interior with historical elements. The pub hosts various community events, contributing to combating loneliness, particularly highlighted during the pandemic lockdowns.
Despite the pub’s success, additional costs have hindered the hiring of new staff, with plans for expansion on hold due to looming financial challenges. Mr. Greenaway’s plea to Ms. Reeves underscores the critical role of addressing rates to safeguard the industry’s future.
