A 20-year-old individual with intentions linked to terrorism, possessing a video demonstrating bomb-making techniques for an explosive commonly used in attacks in the UK, has been sentenced to four years in prison. Adam Mahmood, who had a significant following on TikTok, requested the instructional video from another user via a messaging app. Moreover, the police discovered medieval weapons in Mahmood’s bedroom during their investigation.
Following a week-long trial in September, Mahmood, a former student, was found guilty of possessing a recording that could aid in terrorist activities. The judge ruled that he will serve four years in a young offender institution, with an additional three-year extended license period to safeguard the public.
The trial revealed that the bomb-making video provided detailed instructions on creating an explosive device with a detonator and shrapnel. Additionally, the police found a collection of medieval weapons in Mahmood’s possession, including swords, knives, an axe, and a catapult, which he claimed were related to his interest in Islamic history.
Despite no concrete evidence of Mahmood planning a specific terrorist act using the video, the presence of ball bearings in his room indicated a potential intention to assemble such a device. The judge emphasized that the arsenal of weapons found in the defendant’s bedroom was concerning and should have raised alarm among responsible adults.
Regarding the video saved by Mahmood in October 2023, Judge Drew highlighted that Mahmood must have been aware of its content, as it clearly depicted bomb-making instructions, not a harmless video clip. The judge expressed concerns about Mahmood’s high level of interest in prohibited terrorist organizations and the likelihood of him engaging in further criminal activities.
In conclusion, Mahmood’s sentencing reflects the seriousness of his actions and the potential risks posed by his involvement with terrorist-related materials and weapons.
