Jesy Nelson’s partner has praised their twin daughters as resilient fighters in their battle against a degenerative muscle condition. Musician Zion Foster expressed dismay over the absence of early screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at birth, highlighting the late diagnosis of their twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, who are now facing mobility challenges.

The Mirror is advocating for SMA to be included in the standard NHS newborn screening to promptly identify and treat infants with the illness. Foster shared a heartfelt poem on social media, emphasizing the strength and perseverance of their daughters, who are already displaying remarkable resilience.

While effective treatments for SMA exist, they are most beneficial when administered early to prevent further nerve damage. Despite calls for universal newborn testing for SMA, the UK government has yet to commit to a nationwide rollout, opting instead for a pilot program starting in 2027 at the earliest.

In a proactive move, NHS Scotland has decided to implement SMA testing for all newborns starting this spring, contrasting with the delayed approach in other parts of the UK. Jesy Nelson, known for her time in the group Little Mix, has been advocating for increased awareness and support for SMA since her twins’ diagnosis.

The ongoing debate surrounding newborn SMA testing underscores the importance of early detection and intervention in combating this debilitating condition. Jesy’s efforts to raise awareness and push for improved healthcare practices reflect a commitment to ensuring better outcomes for children affected by SMA.
